Into the Minds of the Next Generation

Daniela Owen got her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Stony Brook University. She is a child psychologist and has written the only series of psychology books for children. The series consists of three books: Right Now, I am Fine, Right Now, I am Brave, and Right Now, I am Kind. These books are meant to help children get through difficult times they might be experiencing. Some kids say the books make them feel safe and calm, and that they be very beneficial, especially in these trying times.

We are all having a hard time adjusting to all of the new systems in place; quarantine, social distancing, virtual schooling, wearing masks; it can be very difficult for everyone, especially for children. It is important for young kids to socialize with their friends and participate in activities outside of the house, but now there are much fewer opportunities to do so. Of course, there are countless aspects of our current world that they simply are unable to fully understand at a young age. However, a lack understanding does not make it less scary; it is arguably even scarier.

These unique books that Daniela Owen has written can help soothe that fear. The books speak to the kids with pictures and simple words that can change a young child’s feelings. The books mostly focus on helping children not worry so much about what could happen. It helps them focus on the present and what is going on in their life now. They are fine, or brave, or kind, as they are reading the book. That simple message may have more of an impact than one may think..

The book, Right Now, I am Fine, specifically discusses potential fears of the things going on outside of the world. For example, right now, children might be hearing about the violent protests going on, or are scared of getting COVID. But this book gets them to take deep breaths and realize that they are fine, and focuses their minds on the present moment.

You can find this audio book on Daniela Owen’s Youtube Channel, in addition to some other helpful strategies she has to help soothe, think, and relax.

I highly recommend these books because, as simple as they are, they are useful. It is essential to help children determine how they are feeling, to help them take deep breaths, and feel safe in these trying times.
