Our organization is all about promoting literacy for children. Literature is so important for so many reasons and Book Bears wants to make a difference in our community through the amazing resource of reading. Book Bears Bookshelf is our newest project to help us on our mission. Created by Projects Coordinator Marina Kibota, Book Bears Bookshelf is an amazing resource that provides some fantastic recommendations for children.
The presentation, done on Prezi, can be accessed through the Linktree in our Instagram bio. It’s very easy to use and a great resource for parents/guardians, kids, and teachers. Once on the site, it’s very simple to browse, all you have to do is click on the Bookshelf icon and from there it will take you to a page with categories and topics. As of now, there are currently eight topics to look through: identity, friendship, sharing, bedtime, holidays, exploring/adventure, family, and nature. By clicking on your chosen icon it will take you to a list of a few books under that category for your perusal. Each book includes a quick description of the story and several links to purchase said book.
As an example, after clicking on the Bookshelf icon, I would choose the Nature category. In that category there are three books listed. I then choose Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. From there, I can see the description, “Children will chant the rhythmic words. They’ll make the sounds that animals make…” along with a link to purchase the book from Amazon.
This project makes it incredibly easy to get kids excited for reading. Parents and teachers can use this website very easily to find good books that send just the message they’re looking for. The Categories/Topics page is extremely useful for that purpose. It’s perfect if you are looking to teach kids a specific lesson or a certain lesson. We will also be continuously adding on new content to the site in the form of categories as well as recommendations.
In an interview with the creator of the project, Marina Kibota, she talked about the process of making Book Bears Bookshelf:
“The process was really long. I had to gather information and descriptions from every single book, as well as figure out how to categorize them within the presentation. It took hours over the course of weeks for me to finally gather up everything I needed to complete the presentation. But overall I did really enjoy it because I know a lot of people will benefit from it, and I’m honestly really proud of how it turned out!”
A lot of hard work went into this project, and the results are even better than we expected!
Marina is especially excited about the result,
“My younger sisters (ages 1 and 4) and my cousin (age 3) are all people I know who would love this project! That makes me incredibly happy because they all love listening to stories and I believe that a lot of the selection provided would be books they’ll love.”
The selection of books in this project mostly came from books read at our Virtual Storytimes, collected for almost a year now. All of those books have received positive reactions from the kids, and hopefully this information will be able to help anyone out there looking for the perfect book to read.
