Percy Jackson is the must-read series of this generation. It’s popular all over the world, best selling, and its author, Rick Riordan, has even expanded his fictional universe by writing other companion series to his original Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Olympians. How are these books so successful? Let’s discuss the genius of the Percy Jackson series and how Rick Riordan managed to create such an incredible and awe inspiring world. This isn’t simply a children’s series; it is complex, enjoyable, and intriguing.
The Percy Jackson series is all about Greek mythology and how makes its way into the modern world. Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is a somewhat troubled kid, having a terrible stepfather, diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, and being expelled from school after school. When he goes off to a boarding school, Yancy Academy, he discovers that there is a reason he’s so troubled. He is a Greek demigod. As he gets older, more and more monsters are attracted to him until finally, his mother is forced to take him to the one place he’ll be safe, Camp Half-Blood. It is a camp where demigods go that monsters can’t follow, so they can train safely and meet people who understand what they’ve been through. Percy is thrown into the world of Olympus almost as soon as he gets to Camp and is sent on a quest to go into the Underworld with two other campers. In just the first book out of five, there are plot twists that keep the story alive along with characters that you can’t help but love. You never expect what comes next and throughout every book there is adventure, action, and personal growth and drama that keeps every chapter exciting.
One of the best things in these books is the wide range of loveable characters. Rick Riordan honors so many different types of people in his books. With Annabeth Chase, you get to see a girl who doesn’t need powers to be powerful because she has her brain. With Grover Underwood you find someone who isn’t the type of hero you expect, but someone who cares about the declining environment and does everything he can to save it despite his nervous nature. Nico Di Angelo is a sad Italian boy who overcomes the struggle of losing everything to help save the world. Then there’s Luke Castellan, someone who just wants to do the right thing but gets stuck on the wrong track. Thalia Grace is a strong girl who doesn’t need love to have a happy ending. Clarisse La Rue, Silena Beauregard, Charles Beckendorf, Conner and Travis Stoll, Tyson, Zoe Nightshade, Calypso, even the gods themselves all are complex and real characters that know struggles and face challenges and grow and change throughout the series. After reading this series, I guarantee you’ll understand how book lovers can get so attached to fictional characters. You go with them on an emotional rollercoaster and you can’t help but be invested in how it turns out for them. Then of course there’s the main character, who you expect to be in the spotlight of the whole series, but isn’t, whose loveable, goofy and powerful who learns to step aside and let someone else be the hero.
This fandom also has a number of great merchandise; t-shirts, mugs, phone cases, collectibles, etc, and in 2022 Disney Plus is coming out with a tv series! This is exciting news for every Percy Jackson fan as the movies that came out in 2013 were a bit . The casting calls for Percy Jackson just came out and every fan is hopeful for a good actor representing this beloved character and hopeful to be an extra in the show.
If you read this series there is a guarantee you won’t be disappointed because it is such an amazing story with plot twists, action, and love, it has characters that you will forever feel connected too, and because it is so inspired. Rick Riordan really created something special when he wrote the Percy Jackson series. I know that I will forever cherish these books, and continue to get excited by every twist and turn in the story.
