If You Like These Books, Then You'll Love These: Fantasy Edition

Fantasy is a highly popular genre with elements of magic, mythology, mysticality, and several others that you can’t find in the real world, only those of fiction. That’s what makes the genre so appealing, the sense of escape and wonder. That being said, not all fantasy books (no matter how much you love the genre) will be your cup of tea. In this article, you can find the perfect new book for you based on some other books you may have loved. If you like these fantasy books, then you will love these ones.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter: one of the classics of our time. With witches and wizards, potions and spells it’s a thrilling adventure with, of course, some highschool drama and romance mixed in. This series explores magic through the lens of students learning it at a school, with a main antagonist and several books where the story continues developing. There is heartbreak and the tragedy of a war, but also the small joys of life. If you loved reading this series, then you most likely like books with a sort of hidden world among our own. You enjoy reading about witches, wizards, and magic, along with adventure, emotion, and drama. Check out some of these books, similar in many aspects, that you might fall in love with as you have with Harry Potter.

  • The Magicians by Lev Grossman

  • Pennyroyal Academy by M.A Larson

  • The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

  • The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare

  • The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare

These books vary by theme and story, but all of them have a great sense of magic and/or adventure, with that extra teen drama and a love story to follow. These authors have all created sensational fantasy worlds that you can easily get lost in.

Percy Jackson

Percy Jackson is a well loved book throughout our generation, and for good reason (article on series here). This book has many aspects to it, but the main one is mythology. If you love a take on ancient mythologies and beliefs in the modern world, then Percy Jackson is the series for you. This book has a good sense of humor, beloved characters, quests, war, tragedy; it’s got it all. Rick Riordan is not the only author who has ever used mythology in his stories, however, and if you like his books, then I recommend the following to you:

  • Mark of the Thief trilogy by Jennifer A. Neilson

  • The Cold is in Her Bones by Peternelle van Arsdale

  • Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan

  • Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan

  • Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan

  • Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan

  • Pandava Quintet by Roshani Chokshi

  • The Storm Runner by J.C Cervantes

  • Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee

Many of these listed are either by Rick Riordan or a part of Rick Riordan Presents so if Percy Jackson is your thing, these books will surely steal your heart.

Land of Stories

This underrated series by Chris Colfer is all about a personal take on fairy tales (to read about retelling of fairy tales click here). Two twins fall into the magical world of stories and go on many adventures throughout the series. It has magic, adventure, classic tales, and a way about it that makes you wonder what this author will come up with next. The interpretations make the series amazing along with the original plot and original characters.

  • The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani (article of it linked here)

  • Fablehaven by Brandon Mull

  • Beyonders by Brandon Mull

  • The Five Kingdoms by Brandon Mull

  • Inkheart by Corniela Funke

  • Lost in a Book by Jennifer Donnelly

  • A Tale of Magic by Chris Colfer

These books bring new and classic ideas alike to life. There are alternate worlds, new friendships, challenges, and great stories to tell.

This small list contains only the tiniest fraction of the world of fantasy, but there are countless great reads. These books are all very different from each other, spanning from witches and spells, to fairytales, to other worlds of magic, to mystical creatures, but all have a sense of that wonder that makes this genre so lovable. With a few of these recommendations, I hope you can find a new, engaging read!
